View Full Version : ¿White trash?
White Trash World is a celebration
of an American lifestyle.
Hard working, blue-collar people lovin' and livin' the American dream in their own way. Loud music, big engines, cold beer and hot chicks are a way of life. It's a culture filled with simple pleasures: jacked-up trucks, wine in boxes, pro-wresting, bikini contests and rock n' roll. Who cares what anybody else thinks as long as you're having a good time.

So crack open a cold PBR, sit back, and enjoy your stay at White Trash World!

White Trash is an American ethnic slur with a social class component. It is term usually interchangeable with trailer trash. It is comparable to "honky" in that it is targeted toward white people, but also carries an allegation of low social status and poor prospects (downward mobility). To call someone "white trash" is to accuse that person of being bankrupt of cultural endowment. "White trash" is not a demographic group recognized by sociology.

America is quickly losing the regional distinctiveness of the South through their race for progress. Society is demoralizing the working man through typecasting as rednecks and hillbilly's. Yet America may be destroying a part of itself that should have been explored and listened to. The man who represents lack of formal education, hard physical labor, kinship loyalty and traditional lifestyles is being trampled upon because of the guilt and questioning which his existence creates in the world of progress, business and affluence that America is now so committed to.

This is a model of the relationship still functioning today between the mainstream of American society and working class white culture. Though most are no longer farmers, they retain a sense of rural values. And to complicate the matter further, the rural ideal is often the dream of the working class white. They do not desire to be partners in a law firm, or to obtain a graduate school education; they would like to own land, not always live hand to mouth, have security in health care and be out of the cities and factories. Much of their frustration and anger comes from the fact that this is seldom an option. There is only so much land available, and it is outrageously priced. There are only so many jobs in agriculture, wildlife and fisheries, or ranching; and these now require college degrees.
So those working class whites who do not own land within their families are forced by progress, industrialization, and the incorporation of America into the most dehumanizing of jobs -- mill workers, unions, factories, refineries and the service industry. It is this situation that results in many of the typical characteristics of the angry white male.

The orgins of the term may come from a racially segregated past, but modern usage of the term places emphasis on the word "trash" or the labeling of someone as socially worthless. It is often used by lower class white people to stigmatize others within their class who are perceived to be more backward than the norm for their class. "White trash" are perceived as having crude manners, abnormally low moral standards, and lack of cultured behavior and/or education. Swearing, smoking, promiscuity, drunkenness, overly loud and animated behavior in public, and gambling (especially the copious purchase of scratch-style lottery tickets) are examples of "white trash" vices. The label might be applied to a household that, for example, lives in a decrepit apartment or trailer, has a large family, lacks indoor plumbing, and has a yard strewn with debris or perhaps a non-functioning vehicle.
¿Les suena familiar?
The history of race relations surrounding working class whites is complex. Due to their ambiguous social position, they were historically a favorite villain on both sides of the country. A prime example is during the postbellum period when defenders of the Old South used generalized "white trash" characteristics to justify retaining power in the hands of the gentry and plantation owners. The immoral, degenerate and violent scapegoating of the poor whites was used as an example of the need for the elite to protect others from this underclass who did not have a "role" in society. At the same time, northern abolitionists villify "white trash" to show the result of a slave system on whites as well as blacks. They were the terrible white results of a slave economy.

Pense que hablaban de Cleto:
:lol: :lol: :lol:

...y ahora...
Hillbilly is a term referring to people who dwell in remote, rural, mountainous areas. In particular the term refers to residents of Appalachia and later the Ozarks in the United States. Usage of the term "Hillbilly" generally differs from other terms referring to rural people in the United States in that it can be used for mountain dwelling people anywhere but is generally not used to refer to rural people in non-mountainous areas. Further, terms like redneck and cracker, often connote rejection of, or resistance to assimilation into the dominant culture, while hillbillies theoretically are merely isolated from the dominant culture. Nevertheless, the term is sometimes considered derogatory depending on the context in which it is used or the attitude of the target.

¿Les suena familiar lo siguiente?
Stereotypical characteristics of hillbillies as portrayed in popular media, such as Li'l Abner, are that they:
* smoke a corncob pipe
* are often moonshiners with an (illegal) still on their property
* often drink from traditional moonshine clay jugs marked "XXX"
* often wear a worn out floppy hat
* own a shotgun
* often fight each other along family lines. This is known as a "feud." A historically important fight between hillbilly clans was the Hatfield-McCoy feud.
* are often barefoot
* have poor personal and dental hygiene (sometimes portrayed with few or no teeth at all).
* are not motivated by money or attempt in any way to improve their social status in comparison to the outside world; are content with their lives; do not generally leave their clans to see other parts of the world
* are poorly educated
* play the banjo
* drive vintage pick-up trucks
* wear overalls, with no shirt underneath
* the men often have long, scraggly, and unkempt beards (see Mountain man)
* inbred
* have two first-names, i.e. Bobby-Sue
* are often old-fashioned in political and social views
